Running in Cold Weather

What you need to keep you safe, warm & happy

It's that time of year! When you wake up and when you return home it's dark. The weather is colder and the urge to snuggle up on the couch is tempting. The inevitable will happen...Winter is coming! Sure we had an amazing summer filled with warm (and mostly dry) running + beer-drinking nights! So let's just take a moment to think about our fun-filled summer of running through Vondelpark and along the Amstel...

It was easy to run outside in warm weather, but now when you prepare to go running, you might find the couch calling your name instead! During the winter months, it can be more difficult to stay motivated and keep up with your fitness and social routines. You worked hard all summer/fall keeping up with your running pals and they will be bummed if you stop joining just because its dark and cold. So here are some helpful tips to keep you safe, warm and happy this winter!

1. Stay Safe

Even if you're running on streets or bike paths where there are lights, it is important to wear bright or reflective clothing or flashing lights so you are seen by cars and cyclists. At the very least, get yourself a flashing light arm band like the ones found at bol.com. You can also go to sport stores like Decathlon or Intersport and find reflective vests, jackets and more.

2. Stay Warm

Your winter running wardrobe should include a running jacket or vest, hat or headband, gloves, tights and a few long-sleeve shirts. Though you may have to purchase some new gear, a warm runner is a happy runner and you'll agree its a smart investment to gear up.

Be careful not to over-dress as your body temperature does increase as you run. You do not need many layers, but instead, dress as if it is a few degrees warmer outside to reduce the risk of overheating. You should feel a bit cold when you walk outside to start your run. Don't worry, you'll warm up soon enough!

3. Stay Happy

Let's face it, being outdoors is a lot more fun in the sun and warmth but we can get creative and find ways to keep moving during the winter.

Here are few ideas:

Run when the sun is out

Although you might only have time to run during the evening, find some time on the weekend to run during daylight hours so you can absorb that needed Vitamin C. Here's a hint: Join the next Run & Brunch!

Try some new routes to mix up your running routine

Take a tour through a neighborhood to enjoy some holiday lights. Grab some friends and cheesy holiday attire and participate in the Ugly Sweater Run through Vondelpark on 16 December.

Social running

Running with others is a great way to beat the winter blues. Keep yourself accountable and make your workouts social by joiningRun & Brew a few times per month. You'll have a built-in motivational source, friends to chat with during the run and friends to drink beers with later.

Set a running goal for the winter

Train for a race or try to run your fastest 5K or 10K. Join a group of FYF fit friends who are running the Egmond Half Marathon on 14 January.
